chapter eight
Somehow Carlie managed to slide down to the bottom of the half-pipe on her side, cradling her injured arm with her right hand. But as her friends gathered around her, hot tears were stinging in her eyes.
âOh, Carlie!â cried Morgan.
âAre you okay?â asked Emily.
Carlie bit her lip and tried to answer them, but the pain was too intense.
Amy put her hand on Carlieâs shoulder. âItâs okay to cry,â she said quietly.
Just then Chelsea came over. âI told you not to jump,â she said, reaching down to pull her up.
âNo!â cried Carlie. âDonât help me. Please, donât touch me. I hurt my arm. I think itâs broken.â
Chelsea looked skeptical. âI doubt that you could have broken it just like that, Carlie. You barely even fell.â She reached out her hand again, and Carlie cringed, drawing away from her.
âDonât move her,â said Morgan.
âIâll go get help,â said Emily, taking off in a run toward the lodge.
Before long a crowd gathered around Carlie, making her feel sillier than ever. But soon the ski patrol arrived, and she was gently loaded into a basket sort of thing and transported toward the lodge. If she hadnât been in so much pain, she wouldâve been really embarrassed by all the fuss. As it was, she felt pretty stupid for falling like that, and it didnât help matters to overhear Chelsea acting like she was faking a broken bone just to get everyoneâs attention. Carlie was relieved that only Morgan and Emily came down to the lodge clinic with her.
âEmily, you stay here with Carlie,â instructed Morgan. âAnd Iâll go find Cory or Janna.â
After an examination by a tall, blond lodge paramedic named Andre, it was decided that Carlie should be taken to the nearby town. âIâll wrap it in a brace for now,â he told her with a bright smile. âBut the doc in town will probably do an x-ray, set it, and then put a real cast on.â He winked at her.
âAnd then you can get all your boyfriends to sign it for you.â
âYeah . . . right . . .â Carlie rolled her eyes then took in a deep breath as Andre continued to wrap her arm. It hurt each time he moved it, but Carlie didnât want to show it. She wanted to be brave.
âHey, a pretty girl like you must have lots of boyfriends,â
he teased.
âThereâs one boy who really likes her,â said Emily quietly.
She smiled at Carlie as she held onto her good hand. Sheâd been with Carlie throughout the examination, calmly standing by. Carlie was thankful Emily was there.
âIâll bet thereâs more than just one,â said Andre.
âHey, Carlie,â called Morgan from out in the office area.
âIâve got Janna here.â
âCome in if you want,â said Andre. âWeâre almost done.â
âOh, poor Carlie,â said Janna as she came in and gently put an arm around her shoulders. âDoes it hurt much?â
âA little,â Carlie admitted.
Andre turned to Janna. âIâm afraid itâs broken,â he said.
âBut sheâll need to go to Arrowhead to see a doctor. We already called ahead.
